Personal: Telephone Soliciting

All my personal telephone numbers have been registered with The Telephone Preference Service for some time, but today I received a recorded advertising message which has just p–ed me off. I’ve reported it to TPS and to ICSTIS (the UK regulator of premium rate numbers) with the following message:

On 15th September 2003 at 19.29BST, I received a recorded (female voice) telephone call to my home residential number (that is listed with the Telephone Preference Service).

The message said I had won a £1000 prize award (well, my telephone number had) and that I had to call 0906 638 9992 at £1.50 per minute (call last 7 minutes) to claim the £1000 award. For terms and conditions, I was to see www.moreflights.net (may be incorrect) or write to PO Box 6017, Basingstoke, RG21 4BZ.

It’s bad enough that I was called whilst my number is listed on the TPS, it’s twice as bad that it was a recorded message that had no human operator at the other end, third that I had just got to sleep after an extremely long and hard shift at work, fourthly that it was advertising a premium rate phone number and fifthly that it’s probably a “rip-off/con”!

I hope this company (which failed to give a name, details of where they had got my number – apart from ‘randomly chosen’ or any other identifying information) gets massively fined and shut down!

Another one for Nicky Fisher/Nikki Fisher/Nicki Fisher, wording identical to Dr Levski’s phone call, spamming the number 0906 1119000 and inviting me to waste my time and money. My number is landline, ex-directory and not registered with TPS, though that’s the first thing I’ll be doing after complaining to ICSTIS. (If this scam’s been going virtually unchanged since at least September 2003, how effective are these regulators?) Excellent site. Good work, Richy C.

Well, We’ve been called by “Nicky Fisher” again !.

This time she/they have a clever spin on the automated message. Its pretending to be a 1571 BT message with the opening of the 1571 service ” You have one new message..” and then the spawn of satan starts her spiel of the usual.
It would appear that ICTIS is completely useless since they must have had hundreds of complaints by now for this one pain in the backside at least !
I’m going to drop a line to the Beebs watchdog site to have a look here. Maybe then something will happen.

  3. Graham Graham

Nicky Fisher strikes again – i’ve had two calls from the lovely Nicky informing me that I won a load of goodies. Sadly, life has made me slightly synical so I searched google and struck lucky. However, I do feel sorry for those people who ring in and end up paying a large phone bill (£1.50 per minute) for naff all!!

    It is possible to complain about premium rate numbers from the phone watchdog – ICSTIC – web site shown below;

received a voicemail at 3 this afternoon. like others here I was suspicious and checked the phone number on Google and immediately found this discussion. disapointed not to be winning 6K, more disappointed that someone can get away with this for so long, they must be raking it in.

  5. Gregory Gregory

recieved a voicemail from 1571 on saturday 10/7/04 at 4.01pm about this jackpot promotions, I was wary because she left an extension number and no other number to contact her but this premium rate phone line. and also how was i going to claim the prize, as she did not give any reference number or claims number for me. i thought this was bizzare. and have now reported it to hartlepool bourgh council and passed on the recording.
thanks very much for the person who set this site up, as i was going to ring it. as i am a fool and believe alot of things. thankyou anyway

Nikki Fisher is still out there as are Prize Line UK – we have had messages from both in the last week. Like many above we are regisestered with the TPS – if they are deliberately calling numbers regestered in the database then they are deffinately breaking the law.

    Great site.

    Hi,

I’ve been getting calls from the 01273 861500 number – only occasionally have I had messages left .. I’ve also reported the number to ICSTIS and have contacted TPS also ..

BT seem to be doing more in shutting these people down .. hopefully they will act and shut this person down too ..

Message left on my 1571 service by Nikki @ 11.36am operating as Jackpot Promotions – shame I could have done with 42inch plasma TV 🙂
Filed complaint with ICSTIS, not that this seems to be having any effect.

A voicemail from NF on our return from holiday. I once phoned up on someline like a scratchcard and wasted £6 so I was suspicious.

  10. Silky Silky

I got the £6K/Volkswagon message from the un-stoppable Nickki this afternoon and thankfully I was suspicious enough to Google the number 09061119000 before I phoned it!

How very apt they use the title Jackdaw Promotions, a bird that sees a bright shiny thing and immediately goes for it, do you think they are saying something about the poor sods they’re ripping off!

For anyone else who gets this message and wants to complain you can do so online at

    http://www.icstis.org.uk/icstis2002/default.asp?Node=34

I filled in the form even though I did not call the number, hopefully weight of complaints if nothing else will spark some kind of action

So glad I googled “Jackpot Promotions”. As someone else said, she sounded so natural that I had no idea it was a recorded message. We were away for the weekend and got the 1571 message when we got back. Being the naturally suspicious person I am and not wanting to phone a premium number I thought I’d see if I could find out anything about Jackpot Promotions and found myself here.
I can’t believe these things are legal. If they are they shouldn’t be, and if they’re not they should be shut down.

  12. Dave Dave

I just got the Nicki Fisher call. The law seems to lack teeth here as previous fines don’t seem to have stopped them.

  13. Dave W Dave W

Hello. Jackpot Promotions and Ms Fisher are still at it. Thanks to you guys I didn’t fall for it, but I can imagine how someone would as it’s very natural sounding and she even “fluffed” her lines to make it sound real. Phone number is 09061119000.

  14. Nick W Nick W

Hello. I got in from work last night and Nicki Fisher had left a message on the answerphone. Listened twice to get all the details, then googled this morning and came across this site. Shall register a complaint with ICSTIS.

  15. Praed0r Praed0r

Just got the Fishy Nicky call – thanks to this site I have’nt lost a penny.

Surely whoever rents them the number should bear some of the responsibility – how do you find that out ?

  16. Peter Peter

Like Milano (8/7)I received an SMS on my mobile from “Mike Brow”! “0871 240 2982” saying “Please CALL 0871 240 2982 immediately as there is an urgent message waiting for you.” I phoned the number(01865-284382) and was told that the caller (“Mike Brow from Prizeline UK”) was on holiday, but that I had been the winner of a lucky draw and that I should get in touch with an “Ian Bellows on Extension 1749” or call the Automated Prize Service number on 09058091847 (repeated it twice) to claim my prize. I apparently had won an Audi TT, a Caribbean cruise, a digital camcorder, a entertainment system, or a £2000 cash prize. I was ‘warned’ that it would cost me about £1.50 a minute and that the call would last about 6 minutes. I dialled the ‘090’ number from a my landline and wasted more than £15 to hear an automated voice once again saying what the approximate duration and cost of the call would be. It promised to give my Claim Number at the end. At last my £2000 cash prize was announced and my Claim Number (V2489) was given twice. I was to mail a self-addressed envelope with my name, phone number, and Claim Number to an address (also repeated twice). It was: “AG Promotions, Starworks Development”, and some fast-repeated, inaudible code. The call then came to an abrupt end. Let’s stop this nonsense.

  17. Helen Richards Helen Richards

Also got the Nicky Fisher call today, despite being registered with TPS. Will complain to ICSTIS.

you people have had it easy i have one or 2 of these happening every day , i also have every shyster advertising company phoning me up everyday wanting me to help sick children or some other charity by advertising in there self promoting brochure or calander, then on top of this i have every company selling stuff phoning me up.

I am writing with reference to your complaint about the above-named
service, to notify you of the outcome of our investigations. Please accept
my apologies for the delay in my reply.

As you will be aware, ICSTIS is responsible for supervising the content
and advertising of all live and pre-recorded premium rate services,
(that is to say, services which begin with the digits 090). ICSTIS ensures
that the companies providing these services abide by the Code of
    Practice.

A number of complaints were received from members of the public who
reported having received unsolicited, automated telephone calls to their
homes from a woman named Nicky Fisher. The recipients of these calls
were advised that they had won a prize from a company called ‘Jackpot
    Promotions’.

Following an investigation by the Secretariat, the case against the
company responsible for the service was recently considered by the ICSTIS
Committee and breaches of the ICSTIS Code have been upheld. The
Committee found that the way in which the service had been promoted was
inappropriate as the voice calls had been received by individuals whose
telephone numbers are registered with the Telephone Preference Service.

The Committee also found the promotion to be inappropriate on a further
point in view of the fact that these unsolicited calls were probably
being made to multiple-occupancy households, with no means of being able
to target the promotion. It was unlikely that any assurance could be
given by the company that the promotional message would not be received
and responded to by, for example, individuals under the age of 18 and/or
individuals not authorised by the bill-payer to make premium rate
    calls.

In addition to the promotion of this service having been found to be
inappropriate, the apparent method of promotion is illegal, namely, the
use of equipment to automatically dial consumers numbers and relay an
    automated message.

Further breaches of the Code was found as the promotional voice message
did not appear to have identified the company or individual operating
the service, nor was any contact information provided to the consumer
prior to their accessing the premium rate service. The company also
failed to include information specifically required of competition services
    in the promotional message.

The Committee decided that sanctions should be imposed against the
company in light of the breaches found. It has therefore imposed a fine of
£7,000 and access to the service has been barred for six months. The
Committee has further stated that redress should be offered to consumers,
although you are asked to note that ICSTIS cannot require that this
company refunds you, nor is this sanction legally binding on the company.

In order to claim a refund of the premium rate charges you have
incurred, including the VAT, you will need to write to the company directly,
providing them with a copy of the telephone bill which details both the
disputed premium rate charges and the billpayer’s name, address and
account number, along with a short covering letter, setting out the
reasons for your claim. Please allow at least six weeks for the company to
consider your claim, which should be sent to the following address:

    Heaven Communications Ltd
    Apartment 81 The Quays
    Concordia Street
    Leeds Contact Mr JT Kitching
    LS1 4ES 0113 383 0412

Please note that ICSTIS cannot assist with any claims for refunds, nor
can a refund be obtained on your behalf should the company refuse to
meet your claim – the sanction of redress is not legally binding.

ICSTIS will not become involved in, nor mediate between a consumer and
their telephone company in respect of any disputed premium rate
charges. ICSTIS has no jurisdiction over a telephone company – it is at the
discretion of a telephone company as to whether disputed charges are
temporarily suspended, pending the outcome of a request for a refund and
any request for, or query about, a suspension must be directed to your
    telephone company.

In order to prevent a similar occurrence in the future we recommend
that you install premium rate (090 number) call barring. This should
prevent any premium rate service from being dialled either by your telephone
or PC. Please contact your telephone company for further details.

I would like to thank you for having taken the time to contact us.

    Yours sincerely

If the company that run the Jackpot Promotions scam were fined £7000 and barred for 6 months then why, only an hour ago, did I receive a phone call from them?
It wasn’t Nicky Fisher this time, it was a mans voice. Perhaps it was Nick Fisher, I missed the beginning of the message!! This is the third one I’ve had in about the last 6 weeks.

  24. Dennis Dennis

    GET YOUR OWN BACK!!
Find out who’s doing it. I’ve just spent time finding the latest – Kelly of CF Competitions, PO Box 2029, BS99 7XU, premium line 0906 126 0373. Royal Mail website gave me for BS99 7XU European Enquiries Ltd, Directory Enquiries had no phone listing. Google gave me an Advertising Standards Authority judgement against them trading as National Enquiries, 70 North Street, Bedminster Bristol, but still no phone number. However, Directory Enquiries checked the address and found Consumer First Marketing. So now I’ve set up a fax on my computer, asking when I can call in to collect my digital camera (I live about 4 miles away!). Sadly, their phone isn’t a fax machine, so my fax clogs up their phone line for a minute until it disconnects. I’ve got it set to re-try 10 times, at 15 minute intervals. Actually, because it didn’t get through first time, I have repeated the fax 12 times, so the first try will be followed one minute later by the second try, then the third and so on until the 12th fax after 12 minutes. 3 minutes later, the first re-tries, one minute later the second re-tries and so on.
The moral of the story is – put in some effort to find the office phone number (e.g of the real source of Jackpot Promotions above), then let your computer fax them in your absence for a couple of days. Am I naughty or what?

Thank you for this site – just to let you know, I had the “guaranteed win” call last Tuesday from “Nicky Fisher”. I actually called the 0906 number, but it was out of service – so I tried to enter the phone number on the NET to see if it was a scam. And thanks to this site, I can see it is. Sad thing is, this Co must still be going at least 10 months after the first complaints I can see being registered against it.

The directors of Heaven Communications Ltd are John Timothy Kitchen, 34, Simpsons Road, Leeds, LS10 1JF and Alix Faye Thornton, flat 3, 14 park row, leeds ls1 5hu. If anyone is passing there home addresses, it would be interesting to see what they say about their “business”. Mugging people for money is a crime in most countries. They have also been directors of “Moby Monkey ltd” and “Digital and Electrical Ltd” – both dissolved. There is a recent £11k ccj registered against Heaven Communications Ltd. This information is publicly available at Companies House.
Knowledge is the bomb. I thank you.

I had a call left on answer machine 1571 yesterday from a Sally Becker from Star prize uk , same stuff, a member of household has definately won one of the following prizes
    mp3
    5000 cash
    lcd tv
    mini convertible

she sounded too good to be true, said i could either write to a po box number in Kilmarnock (that doesn’t exist) or phone premium rate line (only 4.50 mins !!!!!) 0906 1118111 she repeated the number and said probably best if i called and not write cos i only had a few days left to claim.

Just want to let you know that i saw all your comments and sounds like Nikki fisher may have changed her name. Didn’t phone thanks to this site (although extremly tempted).

  28. MaryEF MaryEF

0905 000 7209 on my 1571 service. To claim prize of £800. No other information – e.g. that it is a premium rate number! I am ex-directory, so reported to ICTIS. Thanks for this page.

  29. Michelle Michelle

Nicky Fisher is now called Sally Becker at StarPrize UK, PO Box 26065, Kilmarnoch KA3 5YG, 0906 111 8111

Unfortunately I let myself get sucked into the previous scam and even sent off for my ‘all expenses paid 7 day cruise in the Bahamas’ with Jackpot promotions and found that the ‘prize’ actually involved a £39.50 processing fee and was for just one person.

As a single parent making ends meet on income support the ‘prize’ was of course useless, and having just come out of hospital after a major operation I felt very stupid and angry that I’d let these people get nearly £9 of my money via my phone bill. Also adding insult to injury in the fact that these people have tried it on again since then using their ‘new identity’.

Is there no-one that can be bothered to help prosecute these nasty people?

  30. Steve Steve

Got the email version this morning
Ref number is as most others and prem rate phone num is UK also as most others

01273 861500 called me tonight. When I returned the call it was telling me Sky had called regarding system maintenance agreement.

  33. MarkE MarkE

Had a call from Kelly Streton (sp?). Searched a bit and got this site as well as the judgement against them, a bbc investigation, and some news articles from Northern Ireland. None of them very flattering.

The caller identifies herself as being from “CF Marketing”. The prizes listed were: Sony Home Entertainment Centre, 2 1st class tickets to New York, £10k cash, Digital Camera, Mercedes Kompressor. I was advised to send a self-addressed envelope to P.O.Box 2029, Bristol, BS99 7XU. The various sites mentioned identify the company as “Cutting Edge Telecom” Ltd. The BBC identify the owner as “Joe Boll”. I have been unable to find an office number (mainly because I don’t know where to look). I’m not sure how sending them a self-addressed envelope is going to net them much money, so if anyone has any ideas please say so.

    To be avoided.

  34. Ian Ian

Googled and found this site after message left on my answerphone from Kelly Streton @ CF Marketing. I can see other peoples reactions to this and I too will avoid. Question that I’m wanting answered and perhaps I should go through the ‘envelope claim procedure’ is… how will they fit the car or the entertainment centre in my self addressed envelope???????????

    There goes another pig!

got a call from Lucy Parker Jones of UK Research Marketing PO BOX 2087 Wrexham ll11 4zq saying someone had won prize of £1000 to £25000 and to send sae and home telephone no. Is it a con?

  38. Lynne Lynne

Going back to postings on here last March concerning the 01273 861500 number. I have been getting phone calls from this number which is how I found this web site! I typed the number into the search engine and ended up here! Since then, I have had another call from the said number. It is SKY TV. They were trying to sell me extra insurance! My pet hate!!I’ve since registered with TPS and I really hope it stops all of the unwanted calls I am getting. I have a very small internet business. The marketing calls I get daily are infuriating. It doesn’t seem to matter how often I say “we do not take cold calls” I simply cannot get rid of the caller! They can be very rude to the point of verbal abuse! I guess I cannot complain as I choose to put one of my telephone numbers online, but the most nuisance calls are for my ex directory home number. I’m really glad I dropped by and found out about TPS. I’m ashamed to say I’d never heard of it before! So thanks!

Difficult for me to believe anyone relpied to these calls ! Myself; have had numerous calls similiar to those experienced; some by text on my mobile as well.If your’e not sure if it’s a live/real person talking to you, ask them a question whilst they are talking. These messages can be on a tape loop, well some of them are. One message filled my complete answer machine tape the other week. Now, when I have a similiar call I put the phone to one side and let them pay for the extended call. Good idea?…They will probably restrict the loop after reading this!..Found this on.. Google page….. tel. scams uk

    Hi
Had the Nikki Fisher call last year and have just had one from UK RM asking for SAE to be sent to PO Box 2087, Wrexham, LL11 4ZQ. Like others, I assume I would receive a premium rate number to call in order to claim our prize (usual, plasma tv etc. etc.). Googled post code and found this site, great!

Just been called by a recorded message informing me I’d definatly won £5000 and should call 09053854129 to claim it. No information on who they were, no information on charges for calling number, no other contact details such as website address etc… No information on how they got my number (I’m ex directory and registered with TPS). No information on how I’d won it. ICSTIS and TPS informed but I won’t hold my breath though, won’t be long the way it’s going before the lefties get their wish and life means one month and murder is punishable with one week community service….. These people don’t care how many people report them, the fines are pathetic compared to what they’ll be syphoning off in plush cars and when caught will just create a new company and do the same again….

I have seen this 01273 861500 number several times on my caller display when I return home.
I googled it a long time ago and read all about the practice.
Today Nikki Fisher called whilst I was out but I knew she would call again in a couple of hours so I was waiting. She asked for Mr ****** and I asked her name.I told her that Chief Inspector ****** was out, what did she want and she made a hasty retreat saying it was about Sky!!!!
Glad to see these scam warnings on the internet. It has saved me money. Thanks

I’ve just received a phone call along the same lines as the Nicky Fisher one. The following message was left on my machine:

” Hello there, my name is Matt Clark and I’m calling you with a message from Breaking News. You’ve won our five thousand pound prize. Your phone number was selected from among thousands of other subscribers to receive this prize as part of our top 10 prize draw. So congratulations, get a pen and paper……

All you need to do is call our claim hotline
09053856972 this offer is valid for a limited time only, our claim line closes at midnight on March 20th. ”

I looked up the premium rate number at OFCOM and found it was charged at £1.50 per minute. I won’t be ringing it! If it smells like a scam, it probably is.

I received a recorded message on my answermachine yesterday, from lisa moore of telecom promotions advising me that her colleague had tried to reach me earlier and that I had either won a 42 inch plasma tv, a car, a weekend for two in Paris all expenses paid or 7000 in cash. I had to ring 09053850941 within 24hrs to claim. I rang it (stupidly) and had to enter my age and then my telephone number. The recorded message then went on at some great length to describe all the prizes again (I was getting very suspicious by then and SCAM was my overall feeling). I was then told I had won the 7000 pounds, given a claim number and an address to send it to. THEN was told that this call was charged at 1.50 per minute and would probably last 7 minutes, just before the call ended. The address was in Bournemouth. Anyone else had this?

I just got a call from Breaking News saying I have won £5000 and i should call 0905 385 2873. No mention that it is a premuim rate number. I have reported tham to ICSTIS – we have got to keep on these guys cases and get them all banned.

Hello, I am a journalist, writing for a paper called the Sunday Herald (in Scotland), who has been following this stuff about Jackpot Promotions. The company was this week slammed by the Office of Fair TRading for its activities. I would be interested in talking to anyone who has been scammed by this company. Please email me at my addy (nic_nw1@hotmail.com). If you give me a number I will happily call YOU back!!!
