News: Condom Testing

Following on from a link on Yahoo! News about Condomi (a condom manufacturer) looking for condom testers, I decided to see exactly how “intimate” the questions were on their detailed questionnaire to apply (considerings over 10,000 sexually active men and women have already applied I would guess they have a good idea of people’s sex lifes by now).

The questions are (all are text entry boxes apart from [X] which are checkboxes):

  • Your name (*obligatory)
  • Your E-Mail (*obligatory)
  1. Are you male or female
    Male Female

  2. How old are you?
  3. Where do you live?
  4. What University are you studying at?
  5. What are you studying?
  6. Are you single or in a relationship?
  7. Are you straight/gay/bi-sexual?

Hmm, seven questions so far and not too personal so far… Let’s progress onto page 2:

  1. How many sexual partners have you had?
    • 0-5
    • 5-10
    • 10-20
    • 20-30
    • 30-40
    • 40-50
    • 50-70
    • 70-100
    • 100 or more

Ok, I’ll just pause there for a moment. Apart from the fact it’s a poorly designed list of options: for instance if you had had 10 sexual partners would you select ‘5-10′ or ’10-20’?, it gets worrying that a questionnaire aimed to university students has the option of more than 50 sexual partners. I know some people are more promiscuous than I am, but still 50+? I can name everybody I have slept with (forenames AND surnames 🙂 ), but …. Maybe I shouldn’t be so moral about it, but I was just shocked about that option. Moving on…

  1. How often do you have sex?
    • Less than once a month
    • 1-2 times per month
    • Once a week
    • 2-3 times a week
    • More than 4 times a week
  2. How long does your performance last on average?
    • Under 1 minute
    • 1-3 minutes
    • 3-5 minutes
    • 5-10 minutes
    • 10-20 minutes
    • 30-40 minutes
    • 40-60 minutes
    • 1-1.5 hours
    • 1.5-2hours

“How long does your performance last”? LOL! I suppose that is _one_ way of putting it! But I wonder how many people actually said “Yep, on average when I have sex, I’m lucky to last a minute”. Let’s face it, if we’re going to be honest, no one is going to answer that. Personally, I know I wouldn’t come under the first four categories, I won’t come under the last one (sorry girls!): but which ones of the ones in between… Remind me to have a notebook by my bed to record my “duration” in the future so I work out my “average”. I can hazard a guess, but I ain’t posting it in my blog (shall we just say that I’ve got memories of myself and my partner having to walk bow-legged at one point! 😮 )

  1. How many condoms do you use per session?
    • 0
    • 1
    • 2
    • 3
    • 4 or more

Now, if you were looking for a condom tester would you select someone that used ‘0 condoms per session’? Nope. And people, if you know someone that _does_ come under that category – get worried – especially if they’ve answer ’50+’ to “How many sexual partners have you had?”. I don’t even want to contemplate what they could have.

  1. Do you take the lead or does your partner on average?
  2. What’s your most used sexual position?
  3. What’s your favourite sexual position?
  4. What’s your most embarrassing sexual experience?

Ok, questions 12+13 I can understand, question 14 just – but 15? What relevance does that have? And would you really tell a complete stranger?

On to page 3:

  1. What’s the most daring sexual experience you’ve had?
  2. What’s the most unusual location where you’ve had sex?
  3. Who would you most like to have sex with?
  4. What’s your ultimate sexual fantasy?

Now they are just being nosey! Personally, I can’t see how any of those (especially the last two) have any relevance at all in someone’s ability to test condoms.

  1. What condom brand do you generally use?
  2. Where do you normally get your condoms?

If you are complaining about the cost of condoms (and, yep, they can be pricey sometimes), pop along to your local Family Planning Clinic as they give away brown paper bags full of ’em. Not that I would know or anything (whistles). Ok, they may be “unbranded” (well, an assortment of brands), but protection is protection.

  1. What do you usually look for in condoms?

You should be looking for the “BS [British Standard] 3704:1989” (aka “ISO 4074”) kitemark at minimum – this ensures the condom has been tested to be sufficiently leak-proof and strong enough to withstand heavy use (the stricter “European Norm” standard EN600 applies to stronger condoms: if you are considering have anal intercourse, these may be worth considering).

Oh – and check the use by date as well: the latex in condoms starts to deteriorate after a few years.

  1. Are you aware of condomi condoms?
  2. If so, have you used them?
  3. What do you think of condomi condoms?
  4. What makes them different to the other brands?
  5. What’s your top tip to prevent fast ejaculation?

Good market research questions – until number 27. Where did that one cum from? (boom boom! 🙂 ).

At least that’s the end of the survey and they do give you the chance to tick the “Please tick here if you are unwilling to take part in any publicity if you get the job.” box and they say “The data given in the obligatory fields will be saved as defined by the Privacy Act. The data will not be disclosed to third parties unless to companies related to condomi.”. “The data given in the obligatory fields”? Scroll back up and see exactly how many fields that applies to.

My summary: Yep, they do ask for more information then they really need to know!
