On Thursday, I finally plucked up the courage to ask my sweet shy co-worker (MSSC) out on a sort of date… Yep, it’s been hard for me to pluck up the courage to do so (a couple of months at least!) and then once we had talked for a bit via email (I was actually off Thursday afternoon for a surveyor to come round to my house to tell me it has doubled in value in 2 years), I somehow suggested that we go to the movies together. We managed to work something out and come Friday afternoon, at the end of work – off to the cinema we went.
We did originally think of asking my other co-worker “BRCW” if she wanted to come with us (as we were just going as friends), but she’s busy doing other things. So it was just me and MSSC…
I had purchased the tickets in advance (£5.60 each with a 50p per ticket booking fee!) to save a bit of time, and since the movie we were going to see – Johnny English – wasn’t due to start until 7.15pm, we decided to pop to a pub near the cinema for a quick drink.
We got in the pub around 6pm and managed to finish our first drinks around 7pm as we were chatting so much. I’ve found out a bit more about her, she knows a bit more about me – we share common interests in sci-fish type things (although I tend more to be more sci-fi/comedy orientated – she’s more straight sci-fi and separate comedy), both are reasonably fascinated by space and “the meaning of life” style questions (“those of Survival, Inquiry and Sophistication, otherwise known as the How, Why and Where phases” – but this time, nothing to do with having lunch at Milliways), both have a programming background (we both know C and SQL – she knows VB, I know Perl and PHP) and we’ve got a few differences as well (she’s a vegetarian by choice, I like my burgers).
Anyway, we got into the cinema around 7.05pm (10 minutes before the movie was due to start) and it was already three-quarters full! Serves us right for going to see it on its opening night I suppose. We sat in around the 5th row from the front right on the right hand side – I’m not sure how MSSC was able to see the film, but she seemed all right with her popcorn (I had jelly babies: we both brought our own food, but I brought the tickets for both of us).
We really enjoyed the film: Basically, it’s Rowan Atkinson (aka “Blackadder” and “Mr.Bean”) and his side kick Bough (Ben Miller) as two of the last remaining spies for MI7 (the British Secret Service) and the Crown Jewels have just been stolen and he and Lorna Campbell (the Australian singer/ex-Neighbours star Natalie Imbruglia) uncover a plot by the French man Pascal Sauvage (John Malkovich) where Pascal plans on becoming the next King of England by devious means and for a devious reason. Extremely funny, but I do think it is quite a “British Comedy” which means that some Yanks won’t probably understand it (do they know who the Archbishop of Canterbury is and why Pascal would have to do something to him to become King or that the Queen loves her corgi dogs or that this is a general ‘distrust’ of the French by the British or…).
Anyway, we both really enjoyed the film and then headed back to the city centre on the bus next to each other (although, and this is why my shyness gets in the way, I was just on the edge of the seat). When I see her tomorrow, I’m going to thank her again for the lovely evening and I really hope we can “do it again”. If we do start dating, and it’s a bit early to see if we will or not, there will be a couple of hurdles to overcome, but we’ll see. I just don’t want it to effect our working environment if anything does/doesn’t happen….
I got back home around 10.30pmish, and then promptly fell asleep until 7pm on Saturday. Whether the whole “semi-date” like thing was just a bit stressful, or I really enjoyed myself (well, I know I did – I’ve yet to find out if she did) or if I was just generally tired I’m not sure… By midnight I was back asleep though!
