Net: ….for $9 million dollars!

Wowsers – it appears the domain name porn.com has just sold for a Dr.Evilish nine million dollars! And by sounds of things, the new owner considers it a longer-term project and will just keep it parked with a domain name monetisation company.

I know from experience a slightly adultish domain name can easily pull in $20 per day – so this very high typable domain name will certainly bring in the money quick.

Net: The Stargate in Lego

Lego StargateThis is extremely impressive. Kelly McKiernan has made the Stargate totally out of Legos. It’s 19 inches tall, rotates, and has light up cheverons.

To think, when I was younger I thought it was impressive when I made simple things that moved in Lego – this is just taking things to a whole new level. But, saying that, I never spent longer than 3 weeks – let alone 3 months! – building a single item.

I know some people really enjoy Stargate and Stargate Atlantis – but I’ve never really sat down and watched an episode yet, but I’m sure I’ll be made to soon…

Net: Google Pack

I’ve just realised I’ve never mentioned Google’s “Google Pack” – so why am I mentioning it now? Well, the other day I needed to upgrade my copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader: but the Adobe/Macromedia Site only give me a 56k download file (it should be more like 20Mb for the Acrobat PDF Reader) and various other download sites gave me the same…

However, the Google Pack includes Adobe PDF Reader, Norton Security Scan, Spyware Doctor, Google Photos Screensaver (which I’ve also installed), Firefox with the Google toolbar (which I already had installed), Picasa (for photos – and it’s fun finding all the photos you thought you had mislaid) and much more besides.

I very much recommend the Google Pack – if only all software was so easy to install and keep up to date (I just wish Google would include all of their software – such as Google Earth and Google Talk – as options in the Google Pack).

Wikimapia

I just thought I’d give Wikimapia a quick go and add my place of work (the LCB Depot on Rutland Street in Leicester) to the system:

Wikimapia looks good – but get it to integrate with Wikipedia itself and Google/Yahoo/MSN Maps and maybe even photographs and you’ll never need to leave the house again (as long as all pizza places have their numbers listed!)

General: How many magpies indicate sorrow?

MagpieEarlier today, somebody searched for “how many magpies indicate sorrow” on my blog. I’ve got no idea how they found this site to perform the search – but if you are still around Mr (or Mrs) Random Searcher – here’s your answer..

According to the popular rhyme, 1 magpie indicates sorrow:

One for sorrow, Two for joy
Three for a girl, Four for a boy
Five for silver, Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told.

But there’s also:
One for sorrow, two for mirth,
Three for a wedding, four for a birth,
Five for silver, six for gold,
Seven for a secret not to be told.
Eight for heaven, nine for hell,
And ten for the devil’s own sel’.

and from Brewer’s Dictionary of Phrase and Fable:
One’s sorrow, two’s mirth,
Three’s a wedding, four’s a birth,
Five’s a christening, six a dearth,
Seven’s heaven, eight is hell,
And nine’s the devil his old self.
